Pixels, centimetres and DPI explained
Pixels are what a screen or upload portal measures. Centimetres and inches matter only when printing, and DPI (dots per inch) links the two: pixels = inches × DPI. A 2 × 2 inch photo at 300 DPI is 600 × 600 pixels.
Frequently asked questions
How many pixels is 3.5 × 4.5 cm?
At 300 DPI it's 413 × 531 pixels. At 200 DPI it's 276 × 354 pixels. The tool converts automatically when you choose cm and set the DPI.
What DPI should I use?
300 DPI for anything printed, like photos and ID cards. Screen-only images don't really use DPI, so leave it at 300 unless a form asks for something else.
Will resizing reduce quality?
Making an image smaller keeps it sharp. Making it much larger than the original can't add detail, so it may look soft.
